1. Introduction

As the national standard for assessing secondary school achievement, the Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) exam assesses the academic and career readiness of Bahamian students, giving insight into the health and efficacy of the nation’s education system. This research report examines a comprehensive analysis of recent BGCSE examination results, seeking to move beyond surface-level pass rates to identify underlying trends, patterns, and disparities. By examining performance across core subject areas, this report aims to illuminate the key drivers of student outcomes. The ultimate purpose of this analysis is to provide evidence-based insights that can inform educational policy, guide targeted interventions, and foster a more equitable and successful learning environment for all students in The Bahamas.

2. Methodology

The purpose of this report is to identify and analyze the performance of examinees, by subject domain and letter grade, to present the findings in a format more accessible for gathering insights. Data is categorized primarily by subject domain and letter grades. Letter grades are categorized into grade bands, with A-C representing above-average grades and E-G representing below-average grades. Performance evaluation focuses on these grade bands.

3. Background

Examinee performance is measured using a standardized grading scale that ranges from A to G, as specified by the Ministry of Education and the Technical and Vocational Training Examination and Assessment Division. For simplification, grades are categorized into proficiency bands: A–C indicates above-average performance, while E–G signifies below-average performance. Each grade corresponds to a specific level of proficiency, as detailed below:

4. Key Findings

4.1 Overall. The analysis of the BGCSE 2015 examination dataset reveals distinct patterns of achievement and deficiency across subject domains. Organizing the results by subject area: S.T.E.M., Arts, Humanities, and Professional & Vocational Studies, provides a clearer understanding of where the education system is performing effectively and where targeted interventions are most urgently required.

(Foundational core subjects are the essential disciplines, such as Mathematics, Sciences, Languages, and Humanities, that provide students with the basic knowledge, skills, and competencies needed for higher learning, workforce readiness, and informed citizenship.)

I. Mathematics

Mathematics performance has improved slightly: A–C grades increased by 0.96%, and E–G grades decreased by 2.90%. Overall, performance has improved, though proficiency remains critically low.

II. Combined Science

Combined Science performance has improved: A–C grades increased by 5.67%, and E–G grades decreased by 3.98%. Overall, performance has strengthened.

III. Chemistry

Chemistry performance has improved modestly: A–C grades increased by 1.85%, and E–G grades decreased by 0.98%. Overall, performance has improved.

V. Biology

Biology performance has improved significantly: A–C grades increased by 9.07%, and E–G grades decreased by 11.12%. Overall, performance has improved.

VI. French

French performance has improved significantly: A–C grades increased by 7.93%, and E–G grades decreased by 4.45%. Overall, performance has improved.

VII. Spanish

Spanish performance has improved: A–C grades increased by 4.66%, and E–G grades decreased by 2.87%. Overall, performance has strengthened.

VIII. Physics

Physics performance has remained stable: A–C grades decreased slightly by 0.14%, and E–G grades decreased by 0.30%. Overall, performance is unchanged.

IX. English Language

English Language performance has improved: A–C grades increased by 1.95%, and E–G grades decreased by 2.98%. Overall, performance has improved modestly.

X. English Literature

English Language performance has changed slightly: A–C grades decreased by 1.36%, and E–G grades decreased by 0.14%. Overall performance has declined.

XI. History

History performance has improved significantly: A–C grades increased by 11.47%, and E–G grades decreased by 8.41%. Overall, performance has strengthened.

4.3 Disparate Performance Across Subject Domains. A comparative analysis shows significant differences in student success rates, categorizing subjects into high-performing and low-performing classifications. High-performing subjects have a concentration of A–C grades scored within the 70% or greater range; in contrast, low-performing subjects have a concentration of over 30% of examinees scoring in the E–G range.

5. Analysis

The BGCSE 2015 examination results reveal both notable improvements and persistent challenges across subject domains. In S.T.E.M. subjects, Chemistry and Combined Science show strong gains, with Chemistry rising to 68.73% of students achieving above-average scores and Combined Science improving to 62.07%. Biology demonstrates significant progress, with A–C scores increasing by over 9% compared to 2014 and below-average scores dropping by more than 11%, indicating stronger comprehension and problem-solving skills. Mathematics, however, remains critically weak despite a slight improvement, with only 32.17% of students achieving above-average scores and nearly half still performing below average. Physics remains stable, showing little change from the previous year.

The Arts continue to excel, with Art & Design B (83.65% A–C), Art & Design C (76.92% A–C), and Music (73.81% A–C) ranking among the highest-performing subjects overall. These results highlight strong engagement and effective pedagogy in creative disciplines. Humanities subjects show mixed outcomes: Geography emerges as a standout performer with 77.42% of students achieving above-average scores, while English Literature remains strong at 62.70%. English Language shows modest improvement, with fewer students scoring in the E–G range, while History demonstrates a significant recovery compared to 2014, with A–C scores rising by more than 11% and below-average scores declining sharply. Religious Studies also performs well, with nearly two-thirds of students achieving above-average scores.

Professional and Vocational Studies present a more uneven picture. Electrical Installation (71.68% A–C) and Clothing Construction (67.62% A–C) show strong results, while Auto Mechanics and Carpentry & Joinery also perform well. However, subjects such as Book-Keeping & Accounts, Commerce, Office Procedures, and Typewriting reveal high proportions of below-average scores, with failure rates exceeding 30% in each case. These results suggest gaps in workforce readiness and highlight the need for targeted curriculum review in vocational training.

When comparing high- and low-performing subjects, the Arts, Geography, Spanish, and Electrical Installation emerge as clear strengths, each with more than 70% of students achieving above-average scores. In contrast, Mathematics, Book-Keeping & Accounts, Commerce, Office Procedures, and Typewriting are classified as low-performing, with over 30% of students scoring in the E–G range. These disparities highlight systemic weaknesses in foundational numeracy and certain vocational skills, which are critical for both higher learning and employability.

6. Conclusion

The BGCSE 2015 results demonstrates encouraging progress in several core areas, particularly Biology, French, Spanish, and History, which all show significant improvements compared to the BGCSE 2014. The Arts continue to lead as the strongest domain, consistently producing high levels of achievement. However, Mathematics remains a critical weakness, with nearly half of students performing below average, underscoring an urgent need for systemic intervention. Vocational subjects also reveal uneven outcomes, with strong performance in technical areas like Electrical Installation but persistent deficiencies in business-related disciplines such as Book-Keeping, Commerce, and Office Procedures.

Overall, the findings emphasize the importance of consolidating gains in subjects that have improved while addressing persistent weaknesses in Mathematics and vocational studies. Best practices from high-performing disciplines such as the Arts, Geography, and Spanish should be adapted to weaker areas to enhance teaching strategies and student engagement. A balanced investment across S.T.E.M., Humanities, Arts, and Vocational studies remains essential to ensure students graduate with the foundational knowledge, critical thinking skills, and practical competencies required for higher education, workforce readiness, and active citizenship. The results ultimately highlight that while progress is evident, sustained and targeted reforms are necessary to achieve equitable and consistent educational outcomes.
